GPS Vehicles and Assets Tracking FAQ
Q: Is StreetTrek a WEB-based Vehicles and Assets Tracking Solution?
A: both. StreetTrek™ offers a Windows Application running on the user's PC and Windows Mobile Applications that can run on a SmartPhone or a PDA with Windows Mobile 5 or higher Operating System. StreetTrek™ PC Application utilizes maps generated from databases installed on the user's PC. Vehicle or Assets icons are plotted onto these locally-generated maps according to the data received over the Internet, or data from a locally connected device like two-way radio. StreetTrek™ Mobile uses Google Maps.
Q: What is WEB-based Vehicles or Assets Tracking?
A: Web-based Tracking Solutions utilize maps loaded over the Internet. Most Web-based Tracking Solutions run in the Internet Browser, like Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
Q: What are the benefits of using a WEB-based Vehicles/Assets Tracking?
A: Web-based Tracking does not require maps installed on the user's PC. Solutions running in the Web Browser do no require any software installation and you can monitor your vehicles or assets from any PC connected to the Internet.
Q: what are the disadvantages of using a WEB-based Vehicle or Assets Tracking?
A: there are a few:
  • Web-based Tracking solution, especially those running in the Internet Browser, can be launched from any PC with Internet access. Any person with logon information can 'take a look' from any PC connected to the Internet. StreetTrek is a Windows application installed on the user's PC. Unauthorized installation of StreetTrek is locked by the copy protection mechanism. With StreetTrek™ you don't have to worry about who else might be looking at your vehicles or assets.
  • In business environment Web Browser based Vehicle or Assets Tracking solutions can be distracting. Internet Browsers are great for activities like shopping, games, news, entertainment. Do you want your operators working in such tempting environment? StreetTrek™ runs on its own and can be used only for vehicles or assets tracking and nothing else.
  • WEB-based tracking will show only one map. Internet Browsers are Single Document Interface. In layman terms it means you can look at one page at a time. StreetTrek PC Application is designed as Multiple Documents Interface - it can show multiple maps independently zoomed and navigated. You can take full advantage of dual monitor systems by keeping the main map with all vehicles or assets in view on the main display, and maps 'following' individual vehicle/asset on a secondary display.
  • Web-based Tracking receives maps over the Internet. Maps are graphic images that can be of considerable size. On a PC with a high resolution display Web based Tracking tends to be sluggish compared to 'local maps' because of the added time for sending the maps. For handheld devices like SmartPhone or PDA it can be just the opposite, due to limited computing power and storage capacity, and much smaller screen.
Q: Is StreetTrek AVL data secure?
A: StreetTrek™ Servers use strong (128 bit) encryption for all data transmissions. The rules on the client side are the same as for online banking - as long as you keep your logon to yourself, you are safe.
Q: Where does GPS data come from?
A: Vehicles or Assets Tracking data is generated by GPS-enabled communication hardware. GSM/GPRS modems are the most common and practical devices for this purpose. A two-radio with GPS option makes sense for radio-dispatched fleets. A GPS modem or a two-way radio transmits GPS data at preset intervals. This data is either re-routed over the Internet, or received by the base radio, and passed to the Tracking Application that will plot vehicles or assets positions onto the map. Depending on the communication system and hardware, data could be passed in both directions - modem (radio) to client and client to modem (radio). For example, in case of bi-directional communications the client could query the position of the vehicle, instead of waiting for the next scheduled transmission.
Q: What is the difference between tracking vehicles and tracking assets?
A: Quite subtle. When tracking vehicles the user expects getting some additional information like ignition state (on/off), head lights or emergency lights on/off, odometer reading, etc. This information is sent along with GPS data.
